Dao, My An What a Luxury (2023) Digital image printed on paper It’s almost difficult to enjoy the grandeur of finding your people knowing that a version of you, a version that was a “desperate, clawing ball of need” from five years ago, would look on bitterly and wish the same for itself (Radtke, 77). This version exists in the back of your mind and watches the images of your new happy life, unable to do anything but grit its teeth and wonder what was wrong with it—it wonders what was wrong with you. It worries that maybe there’s still something wrong with you and that you’ll lose the luxury of being able to pick who you surround yourself with (because now you have options) and calling those close to you a friend without concern for being overfamiliar (because now you’re not just an option).
