Dr. A. Raymond Jackson
Age 103, of Forwood Manor, formerly of Bancroft Parkway, died January 2, 2000 at Wilmington Hospital.
Dr. Jackson began his business career in January 1916 with the DuPont Company as a Secretary to the Director of Purchasing Dept. and Vice President of the corporation. Upon resigning from the DuPont Company in 1922, Dr. Jackson became affiliated with Beacom College as an instructor of mathematics, investments and marketing perspectives. In March 1925, he purchased a substantial interest in the college from Mr. and Mrs. W.H. Beacom. In December 1925 he was elected Secretary of the college. He continued to play an active role in all areas of the college, and in August 1972 retired as Secretary and Executive Vice President of Goldey-Beacom College.
Dr. Jackson graduated from Perryville High School, Perryville, MD in 1915 and from Beacom College in 1918. He also attended classes at Rider College, Trenton, NJ. He later received the degree of Bachelor of Science in Economics, Magna Cum Laude in June 1984, by special arrangement of the Board of Trustees in recognition of his outstanding achievements. In 1986, Dr. Jackson was awarded the degree of Doctor of Science in Business Administration.
Dr. Jackson had numerous affiliations during his lifetime. His 3 primary affiliations were Goldey-Beacom College, where a dormitory and archives were named in his honor and where he established several scholarships; Wilmington Kiwanis Club, where an award was named in his honor and he was presented the Legion of Honor Citation for 50 years of distinguished service; and finally, Grace United Methodist Church, where he was a past member of the official board and served on numerous committees.
His wife of 75 years, Elizabeth M. Jackson, died in March 1996. He was also predeceased by his son, Stewart B. Jackson in September 1998. He is survived by a son, Richard W. Jackson; 7 grandchildren, Steward B. Jackson, Elizabeth A. Stevenson and Barbara Lee Jackson; and 3 great grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, January 5 at 11 A.M. at Chandler Funeral Home, 2506 Concord Pike, Sharpley, where friends may call one hour prior. Burial will be in Gracelawn Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Grace United Methodist Church, 903 West Street, Wilmington, DE 19801 or the Dr. A. Raymond Jackson Scholarship Fund, c/o Goldey-Beacom College, 4701 Limestone Road, Wilmington, DE 19808.
